Dog Training Long Island, Tips for Taming High Energy Breeds

Some dogs are full of boundless energy and never seem to tire. If you have one of these canines, there are certain things you can do to ensure your pet’ energy does not get out of control. Here are some tips from Canine Commander, a leader in dog training Long Island.

Dog Training Long Island High Energy Breed Tips

Reward Calm Behavior

The best way to encourage your dog to be calm is to reward them for docile behavior. Praise your dog whenever they behave as they should in order to reinforce good behavior at other times.

Use Crates Appropriately

When you cannot directly supervise your dog, you may need to restrict them to a crate instead. Be careful not to place then in the kennel for too long; otherwise, they will have even more pent-up energy that must be released.

Exercise Your Dog Often

Your high energy dog needs lots of exercise every day to help them remain calm. Ideally, this will be done outdoors in a large, fenced-in yard or at a park with a dog run. Taking several longer walks may also be necessary as well. Do not assume two or three short walks around the block will be sufficient, as this is rarely the case. If leaving them in a kennel for an extended period is required, you may want to consider using our board and train program.

Provide Plenty of Doggie Toys

If you have a high energy dog, they may have a short attention span as well. For this reason, you should always keep toys on hand, so they do not get bored. Also, make sure there are an adequate number and variety of chew toys available, or provide dog biscuits or rawhide bones for your dog to chew on instead. These chew aids will help keep your high energy breed dog satiated.

Follow Through with Dog Training Long Island

High energy dogs need training more so than other breeds to control their behavior. Ideally, this training will begin when your dog is a puppy; however, if you have an older dog, training is still essential. Your dog should learn proper pack behavior, which means you should establish yourself as the alpha or leader first.

If you have a high energy breed, you may need help with training, which is where trained experts at Canine Commander come in. We can help you with your high energy breed dog. Contact Canine Commander today.

"Just got my pup back and he is so well behaved! These guys are awesome and went above and beyond to train my puppy. They were very quick to respond and always gave us video updates while Dobby was still with them. Highly recommend."
